8 ways to maximise discounts and cashbacks to save 20 to 80% on your regular expenses

My experience of online shopping and discounts and cashbacks in the last couple of years

I have been doing online shopping and availing discounts and cashbacks since the last few years. While doing this, I have realised that I saved money in the form of discounts and cashbacks on almost every online shopping transaction. During this process, I must have saved a couple of lakh Rupees, if not more and trust me this is not an exaggeration.

In these last few years, I have tried and tested a lot of websites, some of which delighted in most aspects of customer experience, while some disappointed like anything. Through this article, I will share my experience about good websites and how I have saved money on regular expenses by shifting from offline to online. In short, through this article, I will show you how you can:

1) Save 30% to 50% on groceries, daily use household products, personal use products
2) Save 40% to 60% on prescription medicines and OTC products (if you buy any medicines for self or anyone in the family)
3) Save 20% to 60% on dining out and / or ordering food at home from restaurants
4) Save 20% to 50% on booking movie tickets, travel (bus and airline) tickets
5) Get cashbacks on prepaid mobile and DTH recharge, postpaid bill payments like mobile, electricity, broadband, landline, gas etc.
6) Save up to 75% on purchase of garments and personal accessories
7) Save on 20% to 80% on other services like spa and salon, Ayurvedic massages, hotel accommodations etc.
8) Save on any other expenses that you may incurring regularly or on an adhoc basis

If you are one of those who does online shopping or is open to doing online shopping, then read on as by the time you reach the end of the article, you will have some good takeaways from this article. On the other hand, if you are one of those who doesn’t prefer online shopping then don’t waste your time reading further as this article in not for you 😊

1) Save 30% to 50% on groceries and daily use household products
In this category, Amazon India is my favourite. Through Amazon India, every month I save 30% to 50% on my regular monthly groceries, FMCG goods, daily use household products and personal use products. In this category Amazon has 2 concepts.

a) Super Value Day offer: This is my favourite offer on Amazon India. Under this offer, you can save 30% to 50% on your regular groceries and daily use household products as follows:
i) Direct discount on product MRP: Amazon gives direct discount on most products which ranges from 1% to all the way up to 50% in case of some products. If I take the average discount applicable on the entire order, then this is in the range of 10% to 15% based on my past experience of the last couple of years.
ii) Amazon Pay cashback:Amazon gives 20% cashback in the form of Amazon Pay for orders of Rs. 4000 and above and payment made through debit card or credit card or net banking of a specific bank. The maximum cashback is Rs. 1200. If the order value is between Rs. 1500 – Rs. 4000, then the cashback applicable is 15% when paid through the debit card or credit card or net banking of a specific bank.
iii) CashKaro cashback: When I place my Amazon groceries and daily use household product orders through CashKaro, then I get additional cashback in the range of 4% to 6%. To know more about CashKaro click here.

How I saved 40% on my latest September 2018 order
On my latest September 2018 order of Rs. 5021, I got benefits of Rs. 1990 or 40% as follows:
i) Rs. 760 as direct product discount + (plus)
ii) Rs. 852 as 20% Amazon Pay cashback for payment through bank offer + (plus)
iii) Rs. 200 as cashback for Prime Day offer + (plus)
iv) Rs. 178 CashKaro cashback

As I have mentioned earlier, during the Super Value Day offer, I usually get benefits of 35% – 50%. So it is always a good idea to plan your monthly grocery and daily use household goods shopping and avail the maximum benefit of Amazon Super Value Day offer. To know more about Amazon Super Value Day offer click here. Please check the latest terms and conditions of the offer on the Amazon website before availing the offer.

b) Amazon Pantry: If you are somehow not able to place your order under the Amazon Super Value Day offer, for whatever reason, then you can place your order on Amazon India under the Amazon Pantry offer. This is an ongoing offer throughout the month. The overall benefits under this offer are in the range of 25% to 40% as follows:
i) Direct discount on product MRP: Based on the direct discount on individual products, if I take the average discount applicable on the entire order, then this is in the range of 10% to 15% based on my past experience of last couple of years.
ii) Amazon Pay cashback: Amazon gives 10% cashback in the form of Amazon Pay for orders of Rs. 1500 and above and payment made through any electronic mode.
iii) CashKaro cashback: When I place my Amazon groceries and daily use household product orders through CashKaro, then I get additional cashback in the range of 4% to 6%.

Even though the benefit under the Amazon Pantry offer (25% to 40%) is slightly lower than the Amazon Super Value Day offer (30% to 50%), still it is a good benefit to get. I always make it a point to place my monthly order under the Super Value Day offer to maximise my benefits and I will urge you also to do the same.

My experience with other websites: Groceries and daily use products are being offered by other websites like Bigbasket, Flipkart, Grofers etc. While Bigbasket has a good range of products in this category, the benefits (discounts and cashbacks) don’t match those of Amazon. Flipkart does not have a wide range in this category. With Walmart stepping, Flipkart should match Amazon’s range in the future.

Grofers has a good range of products (still not as big as Amazon India) and the benefits (discounts and cashbacks) offered are good, but they are more of a mobile App company. Ordering on the small mobile screen does not leave me with a good customer experience, specifically when I can have to option of ordering from my laptop on Amazon India.

So as of now, I am sticking with Amazon for ordering my groceries and daily use products. All the above is my personal opinion about Amazon India and other websites. So if you disagree with me on this matter, its okay. We can agree to disagree with each other 😊

2) Save 40% to 80% on prescription medicines and OTC products
After speaking to quite a few people, I have gathered that these days, in most families, some family member is suffering from some disease for which they have to take regular medicine on an ongoing basis. On gathering further information from people, I realise that the monthly expense on medicines may range from a low of Rs. 500 a month to all the way up to Rs. 12,000 a month.

With regards to prescription medicines and OTC products, if these are bought online, then there are very good offers (discounts and cashbacks) available. These offers are available on websites like Medlife, Netmeds, Pharmeasy etc.

As per the data gathered by me so far, from the above websites, you can get the following benefits for prescription medicines:
a) Direct discount on MRP + (plus)
b) Digital cashback in your wallet + (plus)
c) Cashback when you pay through 3rd party wallets like Amazon Pay, Paytm, MobiKwik, Freecharge + (plus)
d) CashKaro cashback when you place your order through CashKaro.

Actual cost of 2 regular pizzas = Rs. 330 (Rs. 165 X 2)

Less Amazon Pay cashback (30%) = Rs. 59.4
Less CashKaro cashback = Rs. 20

Amazon India provides utility bill payment services, which include:
a) Prepaid mobile recharge
b) DTH recharge
c) Postpaid mobile bill payment
d) Electricity bill payment

If you are placing your groceries and daily use household products’ order under the Amazon Super Value Day offer (refer point 1 of this article) and make payment through a specific bank, then you will get cashback.

Smart tip: What I do is, I place my groceries order under the Super Value Day offer. The products are mostly delivered next day or over the next couple of days. I get the Amazon Pay cashback within 72 hours of product delivery. Using this Amazon Pay balance, I make all utility bill payments after I get the cashback from Super Value Day offer. I also get additional cashbacks on utility bill payments, based on the cashback offers going on at that point of time.

So with some smart planning, you can use the Amazon Pay cashback that you get every month from Super Value Day offer for making utility bill payments.

Apart from Amazon, you can avail cashbacks on bill payments through Paytm, Freecharge, Phonepe etc. My favourite in this category is Amazon at the moment followed by Freecharge.

6) Save up to 75% on purchase of garments and personal accessories
I usually purchase garments from Myntra or Jabong. The range of products available is good along with good discounts / cashbacks. I usually purchase garments during a sale like End of Reason Sale (EORS) or Diwali sale or Big Brand Sale or Monsoon sale or whatever sale 😊

During the sale period, the discounts are at their peak. When I buy garments from these websites, I get the following benefits:
i) Direct product discount
ii) Additional discount offered by merchant website by applying promocode when order value is above a specific amount
iii) Discount / cashback when I pay through specific bank / wallet
iv) CashKaro cashback

I have observed that the CashKaro cashback is higher during the big sale days as compared to other days. So I would recommend that you shop during these big sale days to make the best of discounts / cashback offers.

7) Save on 20% to 80% on other services like spa and salon, Ayurvedic massages, hotel accommodations etc.
